This morning I got to take the Mrs. to the emergency room, which is apx 55 miles from home. On the interstate I was cruising at ~90-100mph. Luckily, I didn't get pulled over, but what would have happened if I did?

If that far away and if it was a bonafide emergency, why not call for an ambulance?

Becuase nobody needs a $1,000 ride to the hospital. That, and it would have taken them double the time to get to us.

Ended up being an ulcer, but she was in A LOT of pain, so I was booking.

Just curious if, "we're going to the hospital" would have gotten me an escort or a ticket.

Only $1000?

Boy are you lucky.

I live less than four miles from the UCLA medical center and the goddamn LAFD charged me $3300 to haul my ass to the emergency room.

Next time I am going to call a Limo with lots of strippers. It will be much cheaper and i might even enjoy the ride.

Likely a ticket while you wait for an ambulance to arrive at the traffic stop. It's all at the discretion of the officer though. 55 miles at a high rate of speed really ups the chances of killing both of you though as well as other people on the road.

i pulled a vehicle over one time, the parents were freaking out and said their child had been poisoned, looked in the backseat, kid was green and coming in and out, so, i told them to follow me, code 3, got on the radio and had a path cleared all the way to the ER.

it depends on the situation. sometimes its bullshit. other times, you have to make a split second decision. if i catch you lying, your done. if i were still leo, i would verify the story. i do it now as a supervisor. if a worker tell me someone died and they will miss work, i look in the obits, or verify by other means. dont tell me your in the hospital, i will call. my employees and learned me well, and i very rarely EVER have anyone call out.

I had a similar situation happen to me. I was visiting my parents one weekend when I was at college and their neighbor shows up at our door hysterical. We learned that her daughter's, who was basically a sister to me, house was on fire and they didn't know if she was alright. Apparently a relative, who works in emergency dispatch, called them when the daughter's address came up on a 911 call.

Long story short, I had to drive two hysterical parents 3 hours up I-95 to this house fire, all the while, listening while they frantically tried, and failed to get a hold of her. That was an experience I never want to go through again.

I was doing 90-100, praying to god that the FHP wouldn't be waiting for us. I was lucky I never passed a LEO on that drive. The daughter ended up being fine, although she lost her dog in the fire.

What does a LEO do if they run across this sort of situation?

It really all depends, you hope to appeal to the human side of the badge. Me personally if it looks like an emergency, then damn it go and do what you gotta do. Some people try to use those excuses and you can usually see right through them.

Thanks fellas. I appreciate your responses. Glad we have this section of the forum to ask questions like this.

End of the story: Momma is OK now. That's all that matters to me. Thanks Boys!

Well.. my thought is that maybe they can help reduce the hypocrisy.

Sorry, its just that the typical arrogant hypocrisy that plagues state and local LEO really bothers me and I like to express my thoughts about it.

There are plenty of other places to vent your issues with law enforcement. This section of the forum is NOT one of them.

Tell the truth and hope. But we're talking about CHP, so there is no hope

Really? I've stopped many of people at 100+ that had "emergencies." I just follow them to the hospital while I hold onto their driver's license. If it's true, they get their license back, if it's a lie, they get a cite.

This isn't rocket science.

I need some popcorn for the ricky racers (boost4me) in this thread.

That's awesome!! that is the way it should be...

So in your jurisdiction is there a law or statute that allows for that, or is that your discretion?

I did this once taking my wife to the hospital when she was having contractions. It was 4:30am and nobody else was on the road. I wouldn't have stopped if a leo was trying to pull me over. Based on her contractions it seemed like she was much further along than she really was, but the baby was rolling on the cord and causing irregular heartbeats. I would have just handed the officer my keys and let him impound my vehicle while I rushed her in the hospital and just hoped he understood.

Same thing will be happening again in early June.

Op are you saying there are no emergency services near you? What if your wife were to code on the way? Do you know what to do? Do have the equipment to handle a medical emergency in your car?

I would gladly pay the 1000 for trained professionals with the proper equipment to take my wife to the hospital vice me driving like a crazy dude to the hospital with her in the car with me. Sometimes i know there is little choice but the ambulance is the smarter one

When my wife was pregnant I was speeding to the hospital that was 40 miles away, I got pulled over, and as soon as the officer got to my window I told him my wife is having a baby. He looked in and radio'd ahead that I'm heading through the area. He even escorted me to the county line, it was cool as hell. He just told me to keep it under 70 (speed limit at the time was 55).

We live pretty far from the fire rescue station... it would take an ambulance at least 15-20 minutes to get to my house.

If someone were to code on me while at the house... I would start CPR and call 911, but if they were still conscious but going down or whatever, I could have them at the hospital in 10 minutes, abeit driving like a bat out of hell, vs. waiting at least 15 minutes for an ambulance, then taking another 10-15 minutes to get to the hospital from there.

So in my case, lets do the math... professional medical care with doctors, surgery etc in 10 minutes vs. waiting 20 for a medical technician then another 10-15 for hospitals and doctors. I would put my hazards on to at least send the message that I'm not out joy riding at 100+ mph. I sure as hell wouldn't stop for the police either... They can follow me to the ER if they can keep up ;-)

I'll take my chances.... .if they were to code in the car... I'd pull over and start CPR on the side of the road... call 911.
