Could be true, but at least if you fixed the 'problem' he no longer has legal action and he has to simply deal with it.

An abuse of power how? Because he gave you a verbal warning to change your illegal exhaust or face the consequences? Damn him.

thats why cops will never get my respect he has to act all big and bad just because he has a badge and make threats instead of telling you his problem like a normal respectful human being. without his badge I bet you he wont act all bad ass like that he just thinks hes above everyone with the badge on.

Grab some high flow cats and I think you will be fine at least if it goes to court. You could throw some LM1's on lol. I can see the abuse of power comment because the Op said he didn't look at the system so the cop has no idea it's catless. Running no cats is a BIG fine though if caught so get that worked out.

What part of 'IT'S ILLEGAL" don't you understand? you have an illegal system running in a neighborhood with a cop. While the cop MAYBE could have been a little more polite, he is right and you are 100% wrong. How is it an abuse of power when you are running AN ILLEGAL SYSTEM? Not only are you breaking your state law you are breaking a FEDERAL law as well. Your excuse that "it is well known that many of us run off-road x" is a specious and ignorant argument at this point because you have been warned and you KNOW it is ILLEGAL. What the rest of us do or don't do is totally irrelevant.

Find out what the noise ordinance is as far as decibels allowed, find out the specifics of Illinois state law regarding modification of your exhaust, put a high flow catted x-pipe and have it checked with a noise meter. get off your high horse you haven't a leg to stand on.

Sorry,

I've got quite a bit of money tied up in this thing. I love the hobby, and when some guy tells me to change it just becasue he doesn't like it, then I have a problem. Especially when it's an abuse of power.

No hard feelings, just pissed.

Horseshit! I guarantee you the cop knows he has an illegal system without even looking at it. I would be willing to bet the op has "gotten on it" in his neighborhood as well.

I ran an off road x pipe for years on my 95 and ran it through my neighborhood all the time and not one complaint from any of my neighbors, including the cops that live on my street and the ones I had to pass by their house to get to mine.

I would LOVE to hear the cops side of this story. I would be willing to bet it is diametrically opposed to what the op is saying.

I smiled when I told my neighbor who is a San Mateo County Sheriff his '99 Cobra is too loud.
He said my wife loves it.

LEO"s love to go fast. On the down side they may have to enforce laws they themselves are guilty of.

Good night..

Did you also run SLP LM2 with long tubes and no cats? If not, then your exhaust is no comparison. You like to make a lot of assumptions just like the trooper.

Considering I've lived here for 1 month, the car has been here two weeks, and I've driven it less than 5 times, I think it's a little premature for him to be coming down and imposing his "authority" in such a demeaning manner. It's not like this is a second or third encounter where I haven't attempted to remedy the situation. All he had to do was state the problem without reiterating that he's the judge, jury, and executioner, and that he;ll write me more tickets than I can afford. All he had to say was, "It's a cite-able infraction, please look into quieting it down."

I'm not on a high horse, nor do I think I'm above the law, and I don't get on it in the neighborhood as there are kids everywhere. I chose to run the car this way. I have two city officers that live closer than the state trooper and both have commented on how much the like the car and the sound.

You don't want a cop that close to you with a grudge. Looks like you're gunna have to do something while you stay there. At least make it quieter even if it's not legal. When he moves out celebrate with open headers!

:bored::rolleyes::cryying: as I said I would LOVE to hear the cops side of this.

I am not making any assumptions. your exhaust is illegal. he has every right to tell you to get it fixed, and every right to do his job and write you up everyday until you do. it doesn't matter if you think he is a prick, HE is right and YOU are in the wrong period end of discussion. get it fixed or get the ticket.

The guy is an asshole period. He even made a "shitty" comment about where my dog shits. It's never been on his property. I have a min pin and his poop is the size of a tootsie roll. I always pick it up when out on a walk. Apparently he wants my dog to use the toilet and flush.

The guy is a prick... period.

You don't think the way he approached the conversation or discussion could have been handled in a better fashion.

If you were my neighbor and I was a cop, and this was the first time we met, you would think that I was a prick too.

I'm not arguing that the setup is illegal, I'll take care of that, but the guy was a prick in the fashion the he spoke to me about the car and my dog.

Perhaps you didn't read post number 26 where I said "maybe the cop could have handled it better" ? I say maybe because as I have pointed out a couple of times now we only have YOUR side of the story and not his.

and while I may or may not think you were a prick I am probably just as likely to chalk it up to a bad day, until it happens more than once.

Funny how this new revelation to your story (along with the troopers disgust for the dog crap) didn't make it into your replies on the "other" mustang forums.

I have an idea... since the two city boys like your car and it's exhuast note so much maybe you could ask them to go speak with the trooper on your behalf?

If I remember correctly a pair of city popo's beats a single trooper unless one-eyed jacks are wild.

I'd swap the off road out and be done with it. I did it here in Virginia. And I run the LM2 system, long tubes but WITH cats. And I have zero problems - and the county cops are here everywhere. Get a BBK catted X and sell the off road. The raspiness is what gets you noticed, not the loud sound!

Agreed... It's no louder than a catted system with Flowmasters until I get on it. It's a known fact that many of us run off road mid pipes.

This guy is going to be a pain in the ass even at stock noise levels.

To the guy who said fix it because it bugs the neighbors... If I moved into your neighborhood and bitched about your dog barking, the color of your house, or the way your wife dresses, you should fix it right? I mean... if it bugs me you should change it correct? Or if I was a cop, I should just fine you and make your life miserable until you muzzle your dog every time he leaves the house. That would be okay with you right?

Just becasue the government forces it down our throats, it must be good for us too. Whatever... Do you support mandatory inoculations as well?

It does suck to have to change your exhaust, but the cop is right. Even though you did not find anything in state law regarding your exhaust, you need to check your local city and county ordinances. You will find noise ordinance laws that while they may not specifically speak about exhaust noise, they will tell you what is the general maximum acceptable noise decibel level before you get a disturbing the peace ticket. Your local ordinances more than likely address the barking dog issue also. I know here in Savannah, if your dog is constantly barking more than 10 minutes you can be cited

OP, you asked a question and the majority or responses you got told you to change your exhaust as it is illegal.

That was not the answer you wanted to hear, so you've changed your thread into some anti-goverment ramble......your exhaust is illegal. change it or dont. If you choose not to, you are going to end up with fines to pay. If you don't like a law, change it! until then, the trooper is right, and you are gonna have to pay to play.

RDJ pretty much hit the meat of it. The troop probably works the night shift and you got his attention. There is no need for him to be looking at exhausts to know its altered. He could probably escort you to an inspection station and really get nasty. The answer is simply, don't push it. You will lose that battle, get it legal. Its not that hard to do.
Or as someone else mentioned, move.
