Then why lock the doors at all?

The ecu in the car is tuned. So the new one is the stock, swap out I thought?

so regardless if i where to purchase a 04 PCM off ebay and slapped it on my car it wouldnt work, id have to get it towed to the dealer to get it programmed to my specific car?

Your call. But I don't worry about my car getting stolen any more than I used to now that it doesn't have PATS.

The way I was reading things was he was going to get his current ECU flashed by Ford then down the road get another one to swap in. I could be wrong though.

“They’re” making it more and more difficult to beat the system. And more and more expensive.

I have to rant a bit...

And yet, people continue to pay into the system. California is only 250 miles wide; the border is within reach. It wouldn't be that hard to pick one of 49 other states to live in if it were me.

Having lived out there from 2009-2013, I considered retiring out on the coast when I got out of the Army. I researched enough and found plenty of red flags that indicated no matter how many car friends I had made out there, I was not staying in California.

The two times I got pulled over in the Screamin Yellow coupe out there were funny. Cops thought they were gonna hammer me to the wall until I showed them my Oklahoma plates, Texas drivers license and active duty military ID card.

It's not always that simple.

I ****ing hate washington. But I'm stuck here.
My kids are here. I'm divorced. Ex wife loves it here. So until they're in college, I'm staying.

Some people own a business and shutting it down to move isn't in the cards

People have families they won't move away from.

Lots of reasons to stay out that are bigger than having a modified car.

I get that. Had my struggles, worked through divorces and stuff too. And my wife is from Tacoma. LOL, I swear I've never seen the sun in that state when I have visited in laws.

Anyways, I know people have their own set of circumstances and reasons for things.

Army is giving out $40,000 signing bonuses. But......with the way this country is going into the shitter, I wouldn't put my life on the line like that ever again.

Through deductive reasoning, I see the only real path to modification in Cali being:
- carb EO parts
- ability to swap pulleys back in before smog
- using reworked stock injectors vice aftermarket ones and return less fuel if running a whipple/KB
- having Ford reflash ECU prior to every inspection.

Swapping ecu’s sounds like more of a pita than just reflashing to me. I also cannot imagine registering out of state and getting caught. Unless you have two homes, doesn’t seem worth the risk to me.

Even an out of state address is risky.

Yup. It is amazing to me (and also not) that tens of thousands of cars cross the border each day with no exhaust, functioning brakes, bald tires, leaking fluid, etc., and absolutely no concern rendered. However. The 1% of cars that are modified become the target in the cross hairs. The sad part is had Whipple done the EO as a “kit” we would probably have been ok as the new mustangs are.

1) both ecu's need programmed for the car. PATS needs programmed at a minimum or the car won't start. For emissions the VIN needs to match too. So you would need a second, identical ecu.

2) everytime you pull the ecu you will need to complete the obd2 drive cycle to clear all emissions monitors prior to testing. This is not an easy process.

3) registration out of states especially a near by state is very risky. It's usually a massive fine if caught. Also, insurance can be finicky about a vehicle registered in one location and stored elsewhere.

I found a brank new programmed and updated PCM with correct VIN and numbers to match 4r3A-12A650-aab for $599.99...i was about to purchase it but i remembered i only have 1 damn key,.. i did research and the requirement is 2 keys for proper programming..i just ordered 2 new pats type C keys, im going to get them cut but do you think the PCM being new udated and programmed i can take those new keys and program them myself or would i still need to go to the dealer you think? according to Flasgship 1 i dont have to but sure didn't sound very convincing....

Did you send them your vin?

To program a key you need 2 keys already programmed. If you don't have any, you'll need someone who can. A good locksmith can do it.

Just remember that everytime you swap pcm's you need to swap sets of keys and run through the obd2 drive cycle. I'd plan to swap a month before testing

Interesting conversation here as I'm thinking of going down the PCM swapping path too with my '14 GT. I'm not very knowledgeable about this sort of thing and wondering if there are other things that may be affected by swapping back and forth, mileage recording for example?
Also having difficulty finding the right number: DR3A-12A650-ACE

What if you have your pats code and provide that to the company supplying the ECU?

Does that change anything or am I just an idiot when it comes to PATS?
