Hurricane Andrew
All of the max wind speeds for Andrew are "best guesses," all of the wind gauges were either maxed out (only accurate up to a certain speed, then they are pretty much useless), damaged, or destroyed. The gauge at the local Air Force Base was completely blown away....
This storm led to Miami-Dade county having the strictest building code in the entire country.
Remember folks, "it's not THAT the wind is blowing, it's WHAT the wind is blowing."

We preach to listen to NHC, local NWS office, and ALWAYS plan for at least 1 category stronger than projected at landfall.I worked Andrew (and some other storms around florida). Wind meters in the Perrine/Cutler Ridge area broke at 225. there were areas that looked like a giant weedeater went thru and chopped everything off at ground level. only thing left were foundations and some plumbing sticking up. no debris, no walls, no trees, no light poles, no street signs....nothing. my own personal philosophy....if it is a strong 2 or above, I'm out of there.
I need rain. My lawn looks like a bleach blonde stripper workin' her way through medical school.
58 degrees currently. You've should love the temperature though. The Deep South has won this years ranking for rain totals. Here is ours.
