Why the love affair with 26 spline input shafts?

Why would anyone with less than 650hp and doesn't races with slicks need a 26 sline input shaft or any other expensive driveline mod like axles.

So many people on this forum have love affairs with useless things. Talking eachother into expensive parts that they don't need. there are a lot of people on here with lots of power that drag race launching with slicks and need this stuff. But most don't, they just drive around town or take there car to the local road course. They only have 530hp and and being talked into this expensive crap and delaying installs because they heard they need this stuff.

Who has broken an input shaft?
How did you do it?
What power were you making?

The same questioned can be asked as to why do we need anything over 250hp for the street unless we are going road/drag racing? People want it cause they want it. I do it cause I get a thrill at modifying my car and then testing it out. Once I smoked my stock clutch I went with the input shaft upgrade just for insurance. Instead of going with new axles I did the complete full tilt boogie upgrade to eliminate wheel hop and after 4yrs of owning my car I have yet to break an axle. That upgrade wasnt cheap either. But to answer your question yes some people do upgrades that they A. dont need and B. will never be able to use on the street like say 800rwhp.

an eaton car on slicks can mess up the input shaft. and look at it this way since u have just come back from the dead it appears.

If your clutch goes out and you go to order another one u have the option for the stock 10 or the better 26 spline and they do dont work with eachother. It cost about 300 dollars to get the 26 spline input shaft. So if your already gonna spend alot of money doing ur clutch upgrade why not take one more weak link out of the transmission and do the 26 spline shaft and the clutch that goes with it?

But u do what u want to do and I will do my way. But if u break your input shaft because its stock with a fairly new clutch then go to replace it with the 26 spline stuff and a whole entire clutch setup I dont wanna see a thread from u complaining cause you shoudve done it before. Remember better safe then sorry and being cheap is pretty sorry.

Room to grow? Why put in a new 10-spine clutch when you can spend a little more a little more and put in a 26 spline clutch and shaft and be prepared for when you get that itch for a twin screw or turbos....kinda like I did. :)

My TOB tube broke, tranny had to come apart to fix it so I put a 26 spline input shaft in. The same thing could be said for the clutches people run.

I see you live in Chesapeake, its kinda like 4 wheel drive here. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I am still on 10 spline by the way... but have thought of the 26 on next clutch install.

To me it's one of those why-not mods. It's an additional piece of security I don't have to worry about again. The next weak link would be the output shaft and if you're breaking that you're not doing it right.

I needed to get a new clutch and wanted to get get some info from the boards on the clutches they like. A ton of guys with 500hp cobras who need clutches and say money is tight for them. Then dipshits say you have to get the 26 spline. Its not necessary so why spend the money. If you have the money then ya its piece of mind and your ready to upgrade on some power mods.

there are several guys here who agree with me I have seen them say its not important for everyone.

BTW its not being cheap its living with-in your means.

Are you pissed about something? Why worry about it? If you think they're unnecessary then don't buy one. I know first hand that they can break with minimal power, relatively speaking. I was in the passenger seat of my friends 03 that made 517rwhp and it snapped power shifting into 3rd on BFG DR's...unless you bought your car to go buy groceries, its only a matter of time.

So when you break yours are you going to replace it with another 10 spline or go with a 26? Ive never broke one but when my tobs broke I upgraded the sleeve, clutch and input shaft. Kinda of a no brainer, I don't understand why this is a question. Are you saying that there is no strength difference between the 10 and 26 spline shafts?

I kinda agree with the living within your means thing. When my tranny shit the bed the first time my clutch went with it, with the money I had I couldnt afford everything and the 26 spline so I stuck with a new Spec 3 10 spline. It would of been nice to have the 26 spline for piece of mind but I couldnt afford it so I got what I could. My cars my DD so I didnt have the option of letting it sit! I drive my car pretty hard (no track) and am yet to break a 10 spline, does that mean I wont? No.

When the 10 spline snaps, damage can be caused to other things...it was a no brainer for me...

You have a lot of reading and research to do my friend. I'm not going to do all your work for you, but a couple of quick pointers for you:

- Drag radials and street tires are a much higher risk to driveline damage than slicks. Their stiff sidewalls transfer much more launch shock through the drivetrain than soft sidewall slicks.

- Nobody has "talked anyone into" upgrading IRS half shafts for quite awhile now due to the fact that more folks have figured out slicks and factory half shafts are a pretty good combination, and the fact that the expensive aftermarket half shafts tend to break too....

- The factory 10 spline input shafts started breaking from the very beginning. (Start doing that research....). Didn't take a whole lot of abuse in many cases and getting stranded ain't no fun. We're spoiled.....500 RWHP is a shiat load of power and if used aggresivley, the weak link in the chain is going to break. This is one of them....
