A little longer than temporary storage...

Well I currently live in the Fort Benning area and I absolutely love this area, unfortunately I have to move to Fort Wainwright Alaska this August.

I looked on this forum and found a little information regarding storage; however most of the storage is done for what I would consider a short period of time. I will most likely be storing the car for 3 years seeing as I don't normally travel back to the states on my vacation time.

What steps would I have to take in order to store the vehicle for an extended period of time? Has anyone had any similar experiences?

I stored my vehicle with my sister last time I went to Germany and well...I won't be doing that again. She drove it harder and faster than I could have haha. Any information would be great. Thanks

probably just MY OPINION, drain the oil and put all four corners on jack stands and cover it..

Make sure you put a huge wall of red tape around it that says "DO NOT START!" and hide the keys.

Sweet ride.
Just a shout out from a fellow Columbus, GA native.

I hope your stay in AK is short so you can get back to that beauty.

i would not drain the oil at all....

you need to find someone that can crank your car like 2 times a month to get the fluids moving in the engine.

i have room in my house for a car to store, ill be cheaper than a storage unit with a care taker

im located east of atlanta.

+1, this is def what i would do. thats a long time not to start it up, seems you would have some problems after letting it sit up that long without using starting it and moving it every once in a while.

When my car sits for extended time periods I:
Put fuel stabilizer in.
Flush all the fluids and fill with new fluid.
I'll remove the belts, I don't take them out I just slide them off a pulley to remove the stress on the parts.
Put the car on blocks. Mine still sits on its weight just not on the tires.
Make sure all the windows are up to try and avoid mice in the car.
Throw a few moth balls under it to deter critters from getting in.

Honestly if I was going away for that long, and couldn't take it with me, I would just sell it, then replace with something better once you are stable in your location again. Sitting is pretty much the worse thing you can do to any vehicle, so if you don't have someone you can trust to periodically run it, take it around the block, etc., then just sell it while it's still worth something.

i think u would be better off taking the car with u if u have somewhere to store it up there, the main thing i would be worried about is the fuel in the tank and getting the load off the suspension. I think u should look into buying a bubble for the car to be stored in too. I have a neighbor that has had his cobra in a bubble since 2007, not sure if he has any problems with it since its still in there but sounds like a good idea.

Thanks for all the good advice; I don't have anyone reladily available to take the car for that long. I'll have to look into the car bubble or possibly selling it (not my first choice).

I'd hate to see you sell such a badass TR Cobra. I hope you work something out OP.

Bubble idea is excellent. That will keep the rodents and bugs out of the car.
But also;
Fill tank to top and add fuel stabilizer.
Change oil. Old can have developed an acid content.
Pull plugs and spray fogging oil into cylinders. The reinstall plugs just finger tight.
Remove battery.
Before the car is rolled into the bag make sure that it has been washed, waxed, and is totally dry.
And I would put the car up on stands, allowing the suspension to droop, then let the air out of the tires.

I believe you can have your vehicle stored on the military's dime if you get orders overseas. From what I've heard they will start it and I think move it back and forth every month. But its just from what I've heard.

Do not go with this option! They sit them in a lot and someone may come by and start it.... People did this on my first deployment and came back to scratches a few dents and some people's car wouldnt start
