I work for CSX as a locomotive engineer ( yes I drive a train ) I drive 6000 hp+ engines every day :D , and I make around $60k a year . I could make alot more if I went to work out of another location in my district but I choose not to just for free time to spend with my wife and have a social life . If I worked at another location I could easily make $80K + but I would never be home and always on the road . I don't have a college education but I did attend for one day :p then got a job at the railroad .

It's funny. When I tell people I'm an engineer, they ask me if they can take a ride in the train. So, now instead of explaining I'm a computer engineer, I say I work on computers. Of course, this leads to questions about Microsoft products or fixing a computer. I did that crap in highschool. The only machines I touch today are my own and family. I can't explain to someone I work on the really big machines that run corporations or that I work on essentially a "mini" Internet for my company.

In any event, life is about no regrets. I bought my car, no regrets. I put myself through college, no regrets. But now, at 30, I've paid off most of my debt, in fact, I could, right now write checks from my bank account to pay off the two outstanding things I have left (student loans, car) as payments. Then all I have is living expenses.

So, I can live like a hermit, drive my car around, make just enough money to support myself and enjoy living. But what's great is, I really really enjoy what I do, I'm good at it, and make terrific money. I like toys, but I like options more. So, as long as my chosen professional balances nicely my ability to have free time and the ability to live according to how I desire... I'm good with it.

I recently saw a documentary "Born Rich" on HBO by one of the Johnson and Johnson heirs. Basically, I'd never want to be so rich that I take everything for granted, I like to work, becuase all I'd have to do otherwise is spend money. And that's dangerous.

I dont own a cobra but I do have an 03 MACH1 I'm 42 yrs old my house is paid for and I work at a boat dealer currently. make around 30k/yr and I survive pretty well. I think that $$ cant really make you happy if you enjoy what you do and can survive it's all good.

You only get to be here for a short while and I feel you should enjoy it while you can You never know what tommorow will bring so take what you can get now and enjoy it. Dont want to look back years from now and say I wish I'd donre this or that........
Just my opinion.

That's exactly how my dad started out. He's president of Georiga Woodlands R.R. here in Ga. It's just a small shortline, but he likes it. Down in Valdosta, Norfolk Southern has pre-engineering co-ops available, I might try to do something like that.

I have been retired since age 54, now 57. I am not good for nothing, I serve as a bad example. I live on a six figure fixed income and everything important is paid for. I worked for over 35 years putting in 60-70 hour weeks. I made it and lost it 3 times and the last time I made it I retired so that I could get out a winner.

I was bone tired. I figured the worst that could happen is I'd have to go back to work. I had two people who worked for me many years, so i gave each of them 33% (free) and took off. I 'll never be really big money rich, but I don't want for anything and the quality of life is fantastic.

The biggest difference is what state you live in. Just for example, I live in california (cost of living is very high), and I just sold my Condo last month. It is only 1041 sq. feet 2 bed, 2 bath and we sold it within a week for almost $240,000. What would that buy you in your state? Realistate is crazy out here!!

Wow, talk about expensive? That's crazy. Here $240,000 will buy you quite a nice large house in upscale neighborhoods.

Damn, this post is still alive?

The above is absolutely correct. I just moved from So. Cali. for slightly less pay in Reno/Tahoe but I take home more due to no state income tax in Nevada. Also, I just sold a 1400 sq. ft. 15 year old home (galmorized appartment) with no real back yard for $435K and bought a 2780 sq. ft. home tjats 1 year old with a huge back yard 20 miles from Lake Tahoe for roughly the same amount of money. All this and I got a huge chunk of $$ from equity. It's all about where you live. Also NO TRAFFIC now just a little snow in the winter.

Remember, It's all relative.....My wife and I make it into the upper bracket of that scale but somehow, we still feel strapped. With a house, 2 kids, and living in California, $140K/year/family is nearly squat unless you live in Bakersfield or something then ya, extra cash but that's not the case. It's even worse in N. California. If you dont believe me, ask our bros in NYC!! I heard life's pretty expensive there too.

Actually the cost to live in bakersfield is sky rocketing right now. its 200k for a house that is 1100sq ft and it keeps going up and up which is making it hard for me to purchase a house :nonono:

I've heard of people buying groups of brand new homes in Bakersfield and sitting on them for a year or two then selling them for 20%-50% more. Builders are discouraging it but can't really do anything about it especially since they are making money too.

That's not as bad as it sounds since housing and other associated expenses are where most peoples' income goes. If you net $28K after housing, healthcare, and other bills (which for you are paid) then you're sitting pretty. Also take into account you are set as far as retirement....that is if youre a career military person. You're well taken cared of. $28K is a lot of take home $$ if you live conservatively.

I'm 26 and single (with live in g/f). $70K + bennies. Problem is I own a home in the DC metro area, so cost of living makes my pay equal to about $50K in the rest of the country. Lucky for me I get $700 a month from the g/f for rent and just under $1000 from the VA for college. My company is chipping in a little for college as well (%100).

Honestly I don't know how some guys do it. Between car payment and insurance I'm out $1000 a month. That's before $150 - $200 in gas, because this is my daily driver. :nonono:
