Both the Escort 8500 X50 and the Valentine 1 are the best detectors available. The V1 gives you alot more information back, that allows you to find the radar source. Many people that don't want to spend the extra money for the arrows, will always spout how they aren't worth the extra money. With the extra money you get a ton more wiring options, a much more solid feeling detector, and a detector that retains it's value. Most people sell their old V1's on ebay for the low to mid $300's and purchase a new one for a tad more instead of upgrading. Both have great sensetivity. The V1 is much lighter and smaller than the X50. While the V1 is wider, it's also shorter and length and height. It's casing is magnesium alloy, while the X50 is plastic.

Stay away from any device that says it jams radar. Not one passive radar jammer works! They have been tested time and again and each time they fail. I had the pleasure of testing a top of the line Rocky Mountain Radar's Phaser unit a couple of years back with a buddy of mine that was an officer. Not once did it jam his radar from any distance. Get caught with active radar and it's $11,000 for each offense up to a total of $75,000 and a jailable offense.

Radar detetors only work if the officer is sitting on the side of the road and just leaving his radar operating full time. Or if you are lucky enough to have a car ahead of you get picked up. All officers that I know leave the radar in stand by mode until they see a car speeding. Then they shoot the radar and its too late for you to slow down because the readout is instant. They may save you in the first 2 instances, but for the most part they wont help.

Red and yellow do stick out but one thing you guys are forgetting is exhaust tone. Here is a good quote for you guys to consider, "when you vibrate the floor of my cuiser as you pass by you get my attention". My friend w/ an Azure Blue Mach 1 with Manaflow Magnapacks was told that once when he got pulld over. The cop also said that the paper work he had in his hands was vibrating when my friend passed.

my .02

I have been unfortunate enough to get two tickets in the last year, got out of one but not the other. One was in my Mazda 4 door, got out of it as the dipstick had no clue. He wrote on my ticket I had a detector, when I didn't. BUt I got out as I looked very carefully over the ticket and found this guy had written me up in the wrong county, 7 miles from where he said he clocked me. The county DA couldnt argue with me on my point that he ahd plenty of opportunity to follow and see if I was DUI..which wasnt the case either. He had no answer for the cop driving 7 miles until he stopped me. I was so adamant about the radar detector comment that he finally told me not to speed in his county and he'd drop it.

Ticket two was in my yellow cobra. 72 in a 55. Cops in Illinios are told not to drop the ticket even one MPH. I had to pay that rather than drive 1 hr to fight it.

I'd buy the X50, I owned a few escorts and passports when I was a speed demon and I loved them. The company did take a downturn when it was sold by Cincinatti Microwave, but I think the quality has been returned to it now.

I am a retired leo,I have a question to ask.I was never trained in radar. Can you shoot the radar on oncoming traffic while you are moving.I got stop the other day and he said he clocked me going 76,but he was driving the oppisite direction. He was very cool with me so I did not question it,but I was wondering if it is accurate.I do not know how fast I was going so I was just curious. Thanks guys....

Yes you can operate radar in moving or stationary mode!

And with some installations, they can shoot both forward and rearward, stationary or moving and can adjust the forward projection angle to sweep across a fairly wide area.

Thanks for your input. I didn't think about a scrambler til now

In talking to a Trooper friend of mine, a radar scrambler is obstruction of justice, which happens to be a felony. Better think twice about the scrambler idea. He almost confiscated a brand new Boston Whaler and a brand new F-250 towing it because of one. So if you like your car, I'd reconsider.

I personally have a Escort 8500, and it has saved my ass a number of times. Unfortunately, I get over confident with it at times. But all it takes is riding in another car without it and seeing a cop go by to set my butt back into reality.

Luckily I have astock Cobra with only a CAI. It is not that loud. Thanks for bringing this to my attention though. I was thinking about a catback that was louder.

I don't know about other states but in Virginia it's illegal to just have a radar detector in your car, now that's some :bs:

If you get the X50, you will be in pretty shape if your following other cars. The instant-on will nail you when you are all alone. The X50 does an excellent job of picking up the quick bursts used with instant-on. I find that I usually don't speed when I'm all alone anyways, I seem to go slower without others cars around me.

Thanks. I stick out by myself so I generally don't go over the limit either.
