Ah, I do understand the concern about the new Tension and Lateral links durability. Try not use the "size" of the control arms as a benchmark. Instead, try to imagine the "efficiency of design" and what improvements could be made over a steel casting. The same principle was used in the new IRS in what they call the "Integral" Link.

Before, Control Blade used HUGE trailing arms to do what the IL links do now... Just 1/64th the size...

It is easier to beef up those two links when needed (if needed).

Advantages are...

Larger disc brakes
Larger wheel width
Wider tire
Less Weight
Adjustable front Toe angle
Adjustable front Camber angle
Same cost (maybe cheaper by now)
Possibly greater durability using advanced forging techniques and metals.
Less moving parts then traditional Double Wishbone AND more durable
More tune-ability then the previous MacP strut.

This is not the Fox body...
This is not the SN95......
This is not the S197........
This is not the old Mustang.............

This is not the old Ford......................

Edit: Besides, it would be the bushings that fail and those can't get any stronger.

I image Whiteline and BMR will have a slew of parts out for the 2015 within weeks of the on-sale date.

I can't wait to see what engines will actually come in the new body. I don't want to hear what does and doesn't fit. I want to know exact numbers, parts, all of the details we have yet to see. Don't tell me shit about the new Camaro, I don't give a pile of monkey crap about that ugly ass car. It can be faster on a road course, hell it can be faster on a 1/4. It's still one ugly MF'er

I want to see the big dog engine, power, boosted numbers and everything else.

...and I'm sure both those companies will offer quality products as they always do.

I am merely pointing out that the MacP Double Pivot suspension is no weak link. In fact, BMW uses primarily this same system in the "All Aluminum" form.

Mercedes Benz did this in 2007 with the SLK.

The previous double-wishbone front suspension with recirculating-ball steering has now been superseded by a three-link axle featuring McPherson spring struts and a rack-and-pinion steering system. This new axle technology revolves around two individual link elements which serve as torque and cross struts. Apart from more precise wheel location, the prime benefit offered by these two links is the ability to compensate for vibrations caused by tyre imbalances or brake force fluctuations more effectively than rigid wishbone designs. Added to this is the fact that, in the event of a frontal collision, the crumple zones in the vicinity of the bottom link level are larger, allowing the front end of the vehicle to absorb more of the impact energy. The torque struts of the SLK’s front axle are made from aluminum, whilst the cross struts are manufactured from forged steel.

On the SLK the links are called the "Torque" and "Cross" links on their MacP Double Pivot. The S550's MacP system uses a "Tension" and "Lateral" link. Tension=Torque link, Lateral=Cross Link.

The C209 CLK

BMW calls it their Double-Joint Spring-Strut Front Suspension. It is BMW's premier front suspension. BMW markets their Tension/Lateral Link (Torque/Cross Link on the Mercs) together as the "Track Control Arms"... I like it.

So you said the the front knuckle is going to eventually go from steel to aluminum. Do you know when Fords considering doing this change? With a IRS and assuming Ford removes a good bit of weight off the front of a Mustang which it looks like they are trying to do the new Mustang may be approaching a 50/50 F/R weight distribution which would be great.

I didn't say Ford is doing this yet, or if this would even be a GT thing this early. BMW save 30% when they switched from steel to aluminum knuckles... How much do those steel knuckles weigh? 15lbs???

That is 4.5lbs (9 total) per side...

The new Mustang is already close to 50/50, especially since the cabin and rear glass have shifted over the rear axle.

I am waiting to get more details on the IRS under the 2015 Mustang. So far Ford has not shown us enough to determine if it is a good design. Ford stuck with the SRA for longer than they may have wanted because people like me were more interested in drag strip times than lap times on a road coarse. We will have to wait and see what SVT does with the IRS. We can be sure they will make the SVT version perform . So far the SVT team was limited by the SRA. SVT should now be able to show their real ability to make a Mustang outperform their competition.

Anybody care to guess at what kind of car this is?
m3frontsusp_zps307423a9.jpg

Its a BMW M3, the trick in all of this is the two ball joints, which in my own little theory makes the car think it has a wider track than it really does. Which is always better. This design is much lighter and caster camber plates are all you are gonna need, just like all the other mustangs.

Ford is just not a performance car company where GM very much is so.

Are you serious? Do I have to recite all the major victories thru the past 60 years that Ford has accomplished? Too many to list. Just one example...has GM ever won overall 1st place at Le Mans? No, they haven't. You need to get a grip on reality.

Plus....Camaros are ugly. They look like squashed Caddys. My gosh...

New Z is supposed to be announced in January, last I heard Ford has not mentioned anything about when the ETA is on the higher mustang models.

Absolutely. Don't get me wrong if Ford wants to they are as capable of producing as high a performance vehicle as anyone, but that's only if they want to. Ford has started to really step it up with the Mustang since the reintroduction of the Camaro, but thats about it. Their highest performance vehicle is a Mustang. As good as the new Mustangs are they still aren't on the level of a high-end model sport cars like Vette's, Vipers, GTR, 911's, etc. Also sometimes Ford may get an individual with some authority that will try and give you great performance for the $, but that's not them as a whole. Ford didn't want to sell Terminators at $34K Coletti pushed for it. How long did Ford decide to hold out and use iron blocks in their performance vehicles when everyone else long since gone to aluminum with their V-style motors? How long did it finally take for Ford to go with a 6-speed over a old 5-speed when everyone else had long since switched to a 6-speed?

For a long time Ford would sit there and let GM better their performance cars without giving them much a fight. Why do you think so many have love for Terminators? It was the first Mustang that bettered it's counterpart Camaro's performance since the early 90's, and it seemed that between 94-02 that Ford really didn't care that they offered noticeably less performance because their sells were better but of course that pissed off the performance enthusiast.

Again Ford is very capable of given you amazingly high performance vehicles and every once in a while they'll decide to do that,(the FGT for example) but they certainly aren't the most performance minded large automaker out there. Toyota is somewhat the same way. Like I said Ford has defiantly stepped up their Mustang game since 2010, but a high-end Mustang is still a performance vehicle based on a low budget platform. That is why Ford needs to work hard not to let GM better them with Camaro because Mustang is Fords performance niche that GM is trying to get in on, where Corvette is GM's. I agree with the one poster that said Ford should target Z06 with a high-end Mustang so that way we will see if GM wants to keep waiting for Ford to make a move with Mustang before they try to better it and then have the chief engineer boast about it. GM IMO will not want to make a Camaro that would compete directly with the Z06 and they may at that point take a chill pill.

Yes I agree that the Gen5's are ugly.

you are 100% right! ford lacks performance and has so for the past what 20 years? Ford offers no sports car. GM and Chrysler offer two V8 RWD cars. GM and Chrysler offer a vette and a viper what does ford offer us??? a mustang! now damn near any car can beat a vette providing that car has been modded out the ass and the power to weight ratio is in favor of that car but it still doesn't change the fact that ford only and wants to only offer us 1 product. the people that don't drive mustang but only drive fords have more options given to them than a guy that buys mustang. what a Taurus fusion focus fiesta? how many SUV's? how many trucks? and what do we get? a mustang. if ford wants to go after the corvette ford needs to make a new car a sports car and make the base model affordable or atleast some what affordable to the average guy out there something GM has done quite well with the corvette. instead of pumping all this wasted time into one car give the consumer options instead of sitting blowers on 1 engine and in 1 car.

Ford needs to built a AC Cobra Coupe & converitable to compete with the Corvete,GM.,& the Dodge Viper.
That may be the answer.
The mustang is not in the same class as the Corvete or the viper.

uuugh. What do you call the 2012 Boss? And please make sure all the information you share on this board is correct...some of it has not been accurate. 445hp and et al is incorrect. And The factory Boss motor is engineered to 8400 RPM all day long. RPMs equal HP:beer:

8400 RPM and fully forged internals, cnc'd heads, and 14 PSi equals OVER 700 RWHP DAILY driver reliable...ask me how I know:rollseyes:coolman:

I don't know why he's complaining on here. He should be complaining to his Ford exec buddies that he gets all his info from.

By the way, for a major manufacturer, Ford is far more involved in performance than probably any other brand in their league. Trying to base how performance-minded they are off of one car is idiotic. Look at how many performance divisions and contractors they have around the world: SVT, RS, FPV, Ford Racing, Cosworth, Saleen, Roush, etc. I can't think of any other brand that has involvment in so many different teams. While not legal in the US, Ford is producing the Formula Ford. The Ecoboost powered, single seater, open wheeled racecar for the street.

If you want to complain that Ford doesn't offer a direct competitor to the Corvette and Viper then that's one thing, but you can't say they aren't performance oriented in the slightest bit, they are one of the main driving forces for performance in the entire industry!

Sports cars aren't very profitable for large brands. They're halo vehicles that attract buyers. So why doesn't Ford need one? Because the Mustang serves as a great halo vehicle for the brand while being a strong seller. So instead of throwing millions into R&D for a limited supercar with stiff competition, competition that would require constant R&D to keep up, throw it into the Mustang program and come up with something that can be offered to more people and still garner as much attention and press, i.e. a "662hp, 202mph GT500."
